Johor Bahru is commonly referred to as JB by Malaysians. It is the southern-most city in Peninsular Malaysia and is the capital city of the state of Johor. JB attained its city status in 1994 and as the capital city of Johor, most of the major government-related institutions in the state are located in JB.

Kota Iskandar
Kota Iskandar is the Johor State Administrative Centre, located at Iskandar Puteri (formerly known as Nusajaya). The development of Kota Iskandar is meant to integrate the state and federal government agencies at one location. To do so, there is also a need for a sustainable infrastructure in an open campus-like concept. Kota Iskandar is also meant to provide a people- and investor-friendly environment as well as a destination that promotes political, social, cultural and tourism development.
Launched in April 2008, there are four main structures in Kota Iskandar, namely the Sultan Ismail Building, Mahkota Square, Dato’ Jaafar Muhammad Building and the Kota Iskandar Mosque. All these buildings are aligned along the axis of the Qiblat, with the mosque at the most prominent position.

The Sultan Ismail Building is the Johor State Legislative Assembly building. It is built according to a blend of Johor-Malay and Moorish-Andalusian architecture. The building has two unique skylights. One is shaped like a pineapple and the other is like a diamond. An atrium called Jauhar Atrium has a waterfall and tropical plants. There are also two gardens in this building, namely the Laman Kasturi and the Laman Bungai Rampai. The building is named after Sultan Ismail Al-Khalidi ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ibrahim Al-Masyhur, the 3rd Sultan of modern Johor.
Mahkota Square or Dataran Mahkota is a kind of park with a flat five-pointed star shaped fountain. The hardscapes are adorned with intricate symbols of Johor and Islam.
The Dato’ Jaafar Muhammad Building is occupied by the Chief Minister’s and State Secretariat’s offices. The building is built according to a combination of Johor-Malay and Moorish architecture. The state executive councillors’ offices are also housed in this building. It is a five-storey structure covering a total of 1,996 square kilometres of office space. The building is named after the first Chief Minister of Johor.
The Kota Iskandar Mosque is the second State Mosque of Johor (after the Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque in Johor Bahru). The Kota Iskandar Mosque is a modern mosque, officially opened in June 2015. Construction of this mosque began in 2012 and completed in 2015. The mosque sits at a position of prominence in Kota Iskandar. It has a faceted glass skylight that tops the building, allowing natural light to shine through. The mosque has six minarets and a beautiful roof garden. The mosque can accommodate 6,000 worshippers at any one time. It is named after the fourth Sultan of modern Johor.
There are three other buildings in Kota Iskandar, namely Dato’ Muhamad Salleh Perang Building, Dato Muhamad Ibrahim Munsyi Building and Dato’ Abdul Rahman Andak Building that house the state department offices. These three buildings feature the authentic Johor Malay design.
There is ample green lung in Kota Iskandar as there are plants and trees indigenous to Johor here. The names of the plants and trees are tagged, giving visitors an opportunity to learn about them.
Dataran Bandaraya Johor
The Dataran Bandaraya Johor is the main city square in Johor Bahru. It was established on January 1, 1994 after Johor Bahru was declared a city. There is a clock tower that sits majestically with fountains on its sides at the square.
As the main city square, Dataran Bandaraya is used for official events, which include sporting events and competitions. At night, stalls are set up where one can find a variety of Johor food.

Johor Bahru City Council
The Johor Bahru City Council is a local council that administrates the Johor Bahru city centre and areas in Iskandar Malaysia. Similar to other city councils in Malaysia, it is part of the state government and is tasked with the responsibilities of ensuring proper management of the city.
Prior to Johor Bahru attaining its city status, the Johor Bahru City Council was a municipal council. The head of the city council is the mayor of Johor Bahru.

General Post Office Johor
The Johor Bahru General Post Office is located at Jalan Dato Onn, next to the Johor Bahru City Council. The General Post Office is the main post office for the state of Johor.
As its name suggests, post office is the place that provides mail services. These services include accepting and delivering letters and parcels, selling stamps, packaging and stationeries pertaining to post as well as other services, which include bill payment and renewal of licences.

Johor Bahru High Court
The Johor Bahru High Court (Crime) is located at Jalan Dato Onn, near to the Johor Bahru City Council and General Post Office. The court is housed in a British colonial building. The entire building is painted white and there is a fountain and a monument bearing the coat-of-arms of Johor.
In Malaysia, there are several types of court. The High Courts are the third-highest courts in terms of hierarchy among the courts in Malaysia. The High Courts have general supervisory and revisionary jurisdiction over all the subordinate courts. High Courts generally confines itself to offences of which the Magistrate and Session Courts have no jurisdiction.

Syariah Court, Johor
The Syariah Court in Johor Bahru is located at Jalan Abu Bakar, next to Pusat Islam Iskandar. The Syariah Court governs Islamic law as well as personal and family laws of Muslims. These laws include matters concerning betrothal, marriage, divorce, legitimacy, dowry, maintenance, adoption, succession and religious endowments.

Bank Negara Malaysia, Johor
The Bank Negara Malaysia, Johor is a branch of Bank Negara, the central bank of Malaysia. It is located at Jalan Bukit Timbalan, near to the Johor Bahru City Council.
Bank Negara was established in January 1959 as a wholly-owned statutory body of the Government of Malaysia. As a branch of the Bank Negara, the Bank Negara Malaysia Johor is to conduct and assist in the implementation of order and policy outline by the head office in Kuala Lumpur.
The bank’s building resembles the Brutalist architecture that is characterised by the massive, monolithic and and ‘block’ appearance with a rigid geometric style and large-scale use of concrete.

Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor
The Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru is a government-funded hospital. It is the largest hospital in Johor and is distinctive from other government-funded hospitals because its exterior is painted red.
Founded in 1882, it was once known as the Johor Bahru General Hospital. The present building was constructed between 1938 and 1941 to replace the original building built in 1882. The design of the 1941 building was based on a hospital in Nanking, China. The building was upgraded and expanded and a new emergency wing was added in the 1970s. In 2009, the building went through extensive refurbishment and a new east wing was added.
The hospital is named after Ungku Aminah Ungku Ahmad who married Sultan Ismail in 1920. Ungku Aminah was granted the title Sultanah in 1959.
