Kelantan is mountainous on the west and is covered by fertile coastal plains on the east. The rivers that flow from the slopes of the mountains empty into the South China Sea and the valleys are fertile tropical fruit orchards, rice fields as well as lush hardwood and rubber plantations.

Pantai Cahaya Bulan
Pantai Cahaya Bulan or Moonlight Beach is one of the famous beaches in Kelantan. It is also the nearest to Kota Bharu. The 1.5 kilometres long beach is covered with fine white sand and the sea water is clean. The trees, mainly casuarinas and palms are set back some distance from the shoreline.
The sea water is mostly calm, especially during non-monsoon season. The view of the South China Sea from this beach is simply spectacular, particularly during sunset. The beach is popular among the locals who go there for picnics, to fly kites or just to relax.
According to the locals, Pantai Cahaya Bulan was the landing point of the Japanese army when they attacked the British army on December 8, 1941.
The journey to Pantai Cahaya Bulan passes through several villages where batik, songket, other handicrafts and fruit juices are being sold.

Pantai Tok Bali
Tok Bali is a small fishing pier in Kelantan. It is located about 50 kilometres from Kota Bharu. Tok Bali also happens to the oil and gas base in Kelantan. Recently, visitors to the Perhentian Islands also board their boats from Tok Bali. Nevertheless, with these recent developments, the main economic activities in Tok Bali remain fishing and farming.
There is a beach called Pantai Tok Bali. It is a beautiful beach that is facilitated with resorts and hotels. As such, Pantai Tok Bali is not only popular among the locals but it also attracts out-of-state as well as foreign tourists.
As the place is also a fishing pier, people also go there to buy the fishermen’s fresh catch from the sea. Some go there to savour the delicious seafood.
An iconic landmark in Tok Bali is the Tok Bali Bridge that crosses the Semerak Canal along the Kuala Besut – Bachok coastal road. The bridge is high enough to allow boats to pass beneath to and from the fish landing terminal. There is also a breakwater nearby to protect the terminal from the waves during the monsoon season.

Pantai Sri Tujuh
Pantai Sri Tujuh is located in Tumpat. It is rather a long beach, spanning seven kilometres from Tumpat to the mouth of the Golok River that marks the Malaysia – Thai border. As such, it is the last stretch of beach on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia before Thailand.
Pantai Sri Tujuh is a sandy beach dotted with casuarina trees. The northern part of beach is separated from a fishing village called Pengkalan Kubor by a small river, called Sungai Geting. The middle-span of this beach is also known as Pantai Geting, probably because of the village Kampung Geting and Sungai Geting. The southern part of Pantai Sri Tujuh has a sandbar that separates the sea from the brackish water lagoon.
The beach is popular among the locals who go there to swim. The sea water looks calm but could be rough during the monsoon season. However, swimming is prohibited in the lagoon as the place is reserved for boating.
Some locals like to go to the fishing villages along the beach to get their seafood supply. Normally, they stay on to savour the fresh and delicious seafood sold in the restaurants around the area.

Sabak Fishing Village
Pantai Sabak is located to the southeast of Pantai Cahaya Bulan in Kota Bharu. It was one of the landing spots of the Japanese army on December 8, 1941 when they invaded the country. The other landing spot was in Pantai Cahaya Bulan.
There used to be at least two World War 2 pillboxes on this beach but they had been washed away due to severe coastal erosion. As a result of coastal erosion, boulders are used as a retaining wall to protect that part of the beach from further destruction.
The part of the beach that is not affected by erosion is endowed with fine golden sand and is fringed by coconut trees. This provides a perfect spot for picnics or for relaxing.
Pantai Sabak is one of the places in Kelantan where traditional fishing villages can still be found. In fact, they are the heart and soul of the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
The beach at the fishing village will be busy with activities when the fishing boats return with their catch of the day. It is a colourful affair with the brightly coloured fishing boats bobbing on the water as well as the sound of buyers and fishermen haggling over the price of the catch.

Tawang Fishing Village
Tawang is a sub-district in the Bachok District. It is a coastal sub-district with beautiful sandy beaches, such as Pantai Kamayang.
As in any other beaches in Kelantan, they are home to many traditional fishing villages. Fishing is one of the key economic activities in Kelantan.
It is a normal sight to see the colourful fishing boats coming home with their catch of the day. This is accompanied by the sound of eager buyers bargaining with the fishermen for the best price.
