Wesak is the most sacred day for the Buddhists. It is also a day for peace and kind acts.
In commemoration of Buddha’s birth, his enlightenment and his achievement of Nirvana, Wesak Day begins at dawn where Buddhists will visit temples and pay homage to Buddha. Devotees gather to meditate, chant, listen to Dharma talks, perform ‘dana’ for monks, give to charities and attend pujas and ceremonies. The celebrations continue with offerings of prayers, joss sticks, and incense. It concludes with a candlelight procession through the streets.

Candles are age old traditions of Buddhist rituals. The light of the burning candle symbolises the light of Buddha's teachings. Candles are used for the offering of light, which is to dispel the darkness of one's ignorance, it symbolises burning away our mental afflictions of desire, aggression, greed, jealousy and pride. Light symbolises wisdom.
Just as one candle lights the next one, wisdom is passed from teacher to student. Through the light from the candle (wisdom), we reduce the darkness in our mind. Buddhists light three candles to represent the Triple Gem - Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha.
