Water is one of the most important substances on our planet. It is truly vital for all forms of life as humans, animals and plants depend on it and need water to survive. If there was no water, there would be no life on earth.

Water is used by humans for drinking and household needs, industrial, agricultural and recreational needs. It is also a thermoelectricity and energy source.

World Water Day is held on March 22 annually to celebrate water, to focus on the importance of freshwater and to raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water.

The history of World Water Day goes back to 1992 where the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro took place. That same year, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in which March 22 of every year was declared World Water Day starting in 1993.

The core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Hence, a new World Water Development Report is released each year on World Water Day, to provide decision-makers with tools to formulate and implement sustainable water policies. This report is coordinated by UNESCO’s World Water Development Programme (WWAP) on behalf of UN-Water. The annual theme for World Water Day is aligned with the focus of the report. Each year carries different themes.

The theme of World Water Day 2021 is valuing water. As a first step to doing our part for World Water Day, simply send an ecard to your friends and family to show that we care for our planet and we appreciate World Water Day.
