The Sungai Lembing town was developed by the British in the 1880s when they set up tin mining industry. This location was the largest and richest producer of tin back in those days. The Pahang Consolidated Company Limited, under the British had a 120-year lease on the mine from 1891. The company managed the mine until 1986. The mine ceased operation due to escalating operational costs, low yields and dwindling world tin prices.

After the closure of the tin mining company in 1986, an old bungalow once used by the mine manager was converted into a museum to display the collection of mining artefacts. This museum was opened in 2003 to show the significant contribution of tin to Pahang's economic and social development.

Sungai Lembing is today a peaceful town but it comes alive during weekends when there is an influx of visitors who visits the Panorama Hill, the Rainbow Waterfall and the Sungai Lembing Museum.
